Evacuation documents: prepare a portable information packet

Decide which document copies and contact details belong in an evacuation packet, where backups live and how to keep the packet current.

Prepare copies now; do not delay leaving for paperwork #

An evacuation packet is a small set of information you may need away from home, backed by a protected archive. Follow official evacuation instructions. If leaving is urgent, personal safety comes before collecting documents or finishing a checklist.

Choose records by the job they may help you do #

Avoid copying your whole filing cabinet. Consider the information needed to identify yourself, contact providers and explain your household’s circumstances. Verify specific document requirements with the organization involved.

  • Identification and relevant household contact information.
  • Insurance provider and policy-reference information.
  • Housing or property record copies where applicable.
  • Current care information and provider contacts.
  • A location map for fuller financial and legal records.

Keep a backup outside the same failure point #

A packet in the same drawer as every original may not help if the home is inaccessible. The CFPB recommends keeping copies in separate places and protecting digital versions. Choose a backup route your authorized helper can actually use, then test it without relying on the device you may leave behind.

Protect a portable packet as sensitive information #

Carry only what is useful for your situation and keep the packet under your control. Use a suitable protective container for paper copies. Keep account passwords, recovery codes and broad access credentials out of an ordinary contact sheet. The location worksheet can refer to protected records without reproducing all their contents.

Review the packet with your communication plan #

Check it after changes of address, insurer, household member or care instructions. Make sure someone knows both where the packet is and how to locate the backup. A home inventory can support documentation later, but it is separate from the information you need immediately while leaving.
